shala etiquette
- Please be on time: Book your class online and arrive early to set up your mat and any props. Settle onto your mat and enjoy the quiet. Doors will close promptly just prior to the start of a class.
- Injuries: Please let the teacher know of any injuries in advance of the class, so we can prepare any modifications
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant, please let the teacher know in advance if possible. We recommend you do not practice asana and pranayama in your first trimester.
- Assists: On occasion a teacher may give an assist, if you are not comfortable with an assist, that’s no problem, you can advise us just before class.
- Phones: No phones in class. This is your time to disconnect from the external distractions and tune into your body and breath instead.
- Silence: Enjoy the silence, please refrain from chatting in the Shala, so that you and others can enjoy the peace 🙏🏼
- Stay for Savasana: Savasana is an important part of the Yoga practice, it allows for your body to rest and release, it calms the nervous system and is an important lesson in slowing down and letting go. Please aim to only leave when the class finishes.
- Hydrate: Please hydrate before and after class rather than during, yoga is a process of detoxification and purification. We want to create some heat to allow for this. Also, please do not eat for at least 2 to 3 hours before class, as you twist and fold forward, you will be cleansing your internal organs and it can feel very uncomfortable if you’re full.
- Bring your own mat & a small towel: We do have a couple of spare mats in case, and we also sell a range at Little Sanctuary as well as towels for wiping down your mat after practice. We have sprays available to clean the mats afterwards.
- Be clean: Please respect your fellow practitioners and come to practice showered and clean.
- Personal belongings: Valuables are best left at home; Little Sanctuary is not responsible for any lost or damaged items. Please leave shoes and personal belongings in the cubes outside the studio.
- Enjoy your practice: Come with an open mind, to explore your body and breath and reconnect with yourself and the subtle energies of your body. Even if a pose feels difficult, try, and focus on your breath. It is only through effort that we can break down those habitual thought patterns that limit us
